What to do when you first leave the studio with your new tattoo?
1
Your artist would have cleaned and wrapped your new tattoo, it is important that you keep this cover on your tattoo whilst you’re traveling home to keep dirt out of your tattoo, to prevent infection. On the first night it is recommended to wrap the tattoo in clingfilm to avoid it sticking to your bedsheets, The tattoo can transfer to your bedsheets leaving a stain but this will also keep germs out, as this is when you’re most vulnerable to infection.
How to clean your tattoo?

It is important to keep your tattoo clean and wash it everyday. Sometimes it's easier to jump in the shower depending on the size and placement of your tattoo but remember not to have a bath, as we want to avoid soaking the tattoo or keeping it wet for a long period of time as this will slow down the healing process. Keeping the tattoo dry is important to encourage the tattoo to heal faster. When washing your new tattoo you want to use non perfume soap to avoid irritation. A quick gentle wash with soap and then a rinse with warm water is enough once a day. Make sure to dry your tattoo properly after. If you use a towel to dry your tattoo make sure its clean as towels can harbour germs.
creaming your tattoo?

You may have been advised by your tattooist to dry heal your tattoo. In this case you want to avoid any cream on the tattoo at all, you want the tattoo to dry out as this will speed up your healing process. If your tattooist has advised you to cream your tattoo then a little goes a long way. A tiny bit of cream (butterluxe is our fave) is all you need, rub it in gentle until the area is dry again. Avoid leaving the tattoo sticky or tacky from too much cream as this can encourage germs to stick to it and keeping the skin wet can slow the healing process down. No cream is needed for the first day for either healing method. Butterluxe aftercare cream should be provided to you by your tattooist subject to availability. If you need to use something else we suggest something natural like coco butter. Please avoid savlon and bapanthen.

Once your tattoo has flaked at around day 5-7 your healed tattoo is underneath. You can now cream your tattoo like normal as it will be a little dry. It is important to keep your tattoo out of the Sun. The first two weeks are crucial but it’s recommended to avoid the sun for 4-6 weeks. Getting sun damage in the healing process can dramatically effect how well the tattoo heals, and can age the appearance of it. Its also important to avoid swimming saunas or hot tubs/ jacuzzi’s for at least two weeks .
Please be aware once you have left the studio you’re responsible for you own healing process however, if you have any questions regarding your healing process you can message your tattooist or the shop directly, we are always happy to help.
